Abstract: In the present work, the risk is measured by the VAR methodology, which was calculated with historical simulation models and variance-covariance of three investment portfolios, with different number of assets and different optimization functions, diversifying the risk and maximizing the cost effectiveness; in order to obtain several scenarios according to the risk profile of each investor. To this end, three investment portfolios were designed, consisting of fifteen, ten and five assets, respectively, which belong to the international services sector in the 2005-2015 period. The results achieved, highlight that the most optimal and efficient investment portfolio, is located in the portfolio of ten assets in the optimization function with maximum return of the Sharpe ratio, since it is balanced, between maximizing return and minimizing risk. Likewise, it was learned that the method that stands out most is the historical simulation, since it presents estimates with a higher loss threshold, giving a better forecast of the worst expected losses of an investment portfolio.
