In this research, the essential oil (EO) extracted from the bark and trunk of the species Bursera graveolens (Palo Santo) that belongs to the Burseraceae family was studied. The plant was acquired in a community called Quimis in Jipijapa city at Manabí province, which is a coastal region of the country of Ecuador. The EO was obtained with the steam drag technique to determine its chemical composition and physical properties. The chemical composition was analyzed qualitatively by GC-MS and quantitatively by GC-FID. Thirty-six components were identified, representing an identification percentage of 98.54 % of the volatile oil. The main compounds in this study are limonene (68.52%) and menthofuran (20.37%). Monoterpene hydrocarbons (70.01 %) constitute the most abundant fraction, followed by oxygenated monoterpenes (23.41 %), sesquiterpene hidrocarbons (4.95 %) and oxygenated sesquiterpenes (0.10 %). On the order hand, the average yield of the EO was 1.26 %. The results of the physical properties analyzed were the relative density of the oil 1.029 g/ml, refractive index of 1,477 and optical activity of +4,567°.
