Abstract: The concept of ontology itself has advanced by leaps and bounds from the fact that it allows me to represent a knowledge base from the reality of the concepts until applying it to the Web development known as semantic Web. In the present work an ontology has been developed for geographic information systems that allows the representation of maps, communication channels, hydrological situation, elevations, besides proving its consistency and taxonomy. The goal is to improve the World Wide Web by extending interoperability between computer systems and reducing the necessary mediation of human operators. The Web has profoundly changed the way we communicate, do business, and do our work. We can make economic transactions through the Internet. We have access to millions of resources, regardless of our geographical location and language. All these factors have contributed to the success of the Web. However, at the same time, these factors that have led to the success of the Web have also generated its main problems: information overload and heterogeneity of information sources with the consequent interoperability problem [Barcelo-Valenzuela et al., 2006]. The Semantic Web helps solve these two important problems by allowing users to delegate tasks to software. Thanks to semantics on the Web, software is able to process its content, rd reason with it, combine it and make logical deductions to solve everyday problems automatically.
