The current necessity of discovering what teachers can do to optimize English classes led to this research study, which topic is The Use of Supplementary Materials in EFL Classes: A Comparative Analysis of Public and Private High Schools. The general objectives for this research are: a) to determine the type of supporting materials used in EFL public and private high schools and b) to compare the supporting materials used in public and private high schools in Guayaquil, Ecuador. In both schools the research was done in 8th, 9th and 10th grades. Fifteen classes were observed in each high school; five classes in every course. The ages of the students vary from 12 to 14 years old approximately. Qualitative and quantitative methods were utilized to determine not only the frequency of supplementary materials used, but also to analyze their pertinence, appropriateness and quality. It is concluded that the lack of fund and the barely usage of supplementary materials in the public school compared to the private one, this diminishes the interest of learning English from the students.es_ES
