Description: | This thesis studies the use of supplementary teaching materials for children in English as a foreign language (EFL) classes. The purpose was to determine the effectiveness of use, pertinence for the topic of class and aim of exercises, appropriateness regarding age and knowledge of students, variety and quality of the materials. Data was collected through observation of 30 class sessions in a private institution with children of 4th, 5th and 6th grade. This data was analyzed qualitatively in terms of pertinence, appropriateness and quality of materials, and it was analyzed quantitatively in frequency of use. Results indicate that materials like the whiteboard, songs and stories contributed the most for learning and were pertinent to the class’ goals and appropriate to the students’ level. This investigation concludes that teachers do make use of supplementary teaching materials with an acceptable degree of variety, frequency and creativity. However, these results are moderately due to factors like provisioning of materials from the institution itself, because some types of supplementary materials are parts of EFL learning packages and because of teachers’ preferences. |
