Tratamiento antiviral de Covid-19: revisión de la utilidad de Remdesivir

Abstract

Abstract: Due to the potential benefit demonstrated in vitro against SARS-CoV-2, remdesivir, an RNA polymerase inhibitor which blocks viral replication, was approved by the FDA for emergency use during the pandemic caused by Covid-19. After this, several trials emerged that demonstrated its efficacy for the treatment of the disease; however, other trials did not demonstrate any benefit with its use, which is why controversy arose about the efficacy of remdesivir, since some organizations recommend it as part of the treatment, and others advise against it. In this review, several articles such as clinical trials, case reports and basic science studies are analyzed to offer a narrative on the usefulness of remdesivir in the treatment of Covid-19 and its safety. The results show discordant findings regarding efficacy, which could be due to differences in the study population, severity of the disease, time of treatment initiation, duration of treatment, comorbidities, etc. Remdesivir could be useful during the viral replication phase and has a good safety profile in most patients, with no significant adverse effects compared to placebo.
