Abstract: Abstract: Exclusive breastfeeding is the way in which the child is fed only breast milk for the first 6 months of life, with the exception of syrups, drops and rehydration salts. Globally, this has not reached optimal levels of prevalence and it is mentioned that approximately one third of mothers practice exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months, several authors report some risk factors and barriers to optimal breastfeeding. These factors hinder its normal course and even cause its abandonment, therefore it is important to define them, which is why this study was carried out. Through the search in three databases Lilacs, Pubmed and Scielo, it was found that among the main factors associated with the abandonment of exclusive breastfeeding were hypogalactyly, the initiative of not breastfeeding, lack of adequate knowledge about breastfeeding, poor weight gain weight of the infant, age less than 20 years and incorporation to student and labor tasks.
