Abstract

Sustainability is a generator of economic, social and environmental balance that allows SMEs to generate progress covering their current needs without affecting the needs of future generations. To achieve sustainability, SMEs must involve research aimed at applying a sustainable model in their activities. The research is part of a PUZZLE project, where researchers from the UTPL and the Polytechnic University of Cartagena of Spain are part of. With information from the Institute of Statistics and Censuses "INEC" and Superintendence of Companies "SUPERCIAS". An instrument on "management of innovation and sustainable development" was applied to the nine planning areas of the Country. With the data obtained, the MOPSE sustainable model was applied, which allowed the integration of theoretical and practical positions in SMEs, generating opportunities for their permanence in the market. The result of the five dimensions of the model was the SMEs in the planning zone 1 positive and negative results, the most relevant were those that do not have an R & D & I department, are unaware of innovative markets and seek to know the possible impacts on the climate change for business
