Description: Abstract:The world's population has been affected by a variety of pathologies that have degraded lifestyle, highlighting diabetes. It s considered the fourth leading cause of death in the world. Therefore, any factor that negatively affects this pathology must be studied, which motivated the accomplishment of this work. The objective is to determine the prevalence of thyroid disease in patients treated for Diabetes Mellitus type 2 in the Hospital del Dia IESS de Loja in the period 2010-2015. In this descriptive, quantitative and cross-sectional study all patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus diagnosed according to the criteria presented in ADA 2016 guidelines and treated with oral hypoglycemic agents and / or insulin are included. It was found that 27.91% (n = 1033) of type 2 diabetics (n = 3729) had thyroid abnormalities, with clinical (n=634) and subclinical (n=305) hypothyroidism being the most common. Together, the most common management was by metformin. Therefore, it is concluded that metformin therapy is related to clinical and subclinical hypothyroidism, probably due to the alteration of TSH values.
