Abstract: The birds of prey (Strigiformes), have several studies on their diet to be considered top predators of great importance in trophic chains. The composition of their diet differs depending on the place where they live, for this reason is important to develop local studies that provide basic information for their conservation. The diet of Tyto alba and Athene cunicularia in the dry forest of Zapotillo (Ecuador) was analyzed by disintegation of pellets. We identified 526 dams for Athene cunicularia and 172 dams for Tyto alba, belonging to the Insecta, Arachnida, Amphibia and Mammalia classes. Insects were the dominant diet of A. cunicularia, whereas for T. alba, mammals were the main diet being Mus musculus the group-prey with the highest percentage of individuals. Regarding the trophic amplitude, based on standardized Levins index (Be = 1.37) T. alba behaves as a predator specialist in mice, whereas A. cunicularia (Be = 0.04) behaves as a specialized generalist in arthropods. Based on the results, there no overlap of trophic niche between T. alba and A. cunicularia.
