Abstract: The objective of the present research is to analyze the regional productive structure, through the location and productive specialization index, from the employment data by branch of economic activity and the Provincial Gross Value Added, which allow to identify the sector and the activity where production is located and specialized, in the period 2007-2016. The main results indicated that the tertiary sector corresponds to the economic activity that has the highest participation in the VAB with 55%, and that which houses the largest number of employed persons with an average of 51% of the PEA; however, employment is located in a greater proportion in the primary sector with an index of 1,519. On the other hand, with respect to the national average, the sector with the greatest continuing specialization is the primary; in addition, observing a greater number of provinces specialize more amount in the tertiary sector. It is concluded that in Ecuador, not necessarily an increase in the specialization of a sector, leads to an increase in the location of that sector.
