Abstract

Abstract: The mangrove is home to the great biodiversity of both native and migratory species and serves as a protection for the tropical coasts, aspects such as the management and sustainable use of resources are affecting this ecosystem. Through a participatory diagnosis with members of the Asociaciones de Pescadores Mariscadores y Afines a Costa Rica (APMACR) y Asociación de Pescadores Mariscadores Anexos Isla Bellavista (APMAIB), we identified the perception about the current state of the mangrove ecosystem, threats, and management actions carried out by the associations for their conservation. Several causes were identified that originate habitat vulnerability, environmental management carried out in the mangroves, implies on the one hand the regulations, management strategies, and environmental education implemented to conserve the ecosystem. Aware of the problems they face, and environmental education strategy was designed to raise awareness among the associations that are custodians of mangroves, as well as government actors about the importance of the ecosystem on a social, economic and ecological level.
