Factors affecting EFL student´s oral communication skills

Abstract

Abstract:The development of students' oral communication skills in the English language are determined by several factors, including: the pedagogical factors that correspond to the teachers; and the individual factors that correspond to the students. For this reason, this research was carried out with the aim of identifying the factors that affect the command of oral communication in the English language in public high school students. The research design was a mixed approach (quantitative and qualitative). Data collection instruments such as surveys to 5 teachers and 30 students, interviews with 5 teachers, and class observation sheets were applied. The results obtained determined that the pedagogical factors that have the highest incidence are teacher planning, teaching methodologies and teacher motivation. With regard to individual factors, it was found that the most recurrent are: student s motivation, anxiety that negatively affects the teaching-learning process; and, oral expression that limits the development of vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency and grammar.
