Factors affecting EFL student s oral communication skills

Abstract

Abstract:The present research called Factors affecting EFL students oral communication skills has the purpose to determine what pedagogical and student factors do affect student s proficiency in English oral communication skills. This research took place in the Ecuadorian high school located in the Cotopaxi province. Thesamples were fiveteachers and 40students of the first grade of senior high school, the age range of students goes from 13to 16 years old,and their English level of knowledge is intermediate. A mixed-method approach was used, it includes the qualitative and quantitative approach, the instruments used to collect information were surveys, questionaries, and one-hour observation per class was made to gather information.This research demonstrates that planning, methods, resources, language practice, anxiety, and linguistics factors do affect the student s proficiency in oral communication skills, as well as the student s anxiety, showed to be a crucial factor, due to the students experience fear, nervousness, worry, and even dread to speak Englishin front of their partners and participate in class.
