Factors affecting EFL student s oral communication skills

Abstract

Abstract:The investigation theme was focused on Factors affecting EFL students oral communication skills . The aim of this research was to identify the factors that affect public high school students proficiency in English oral communication. The research process was applied in Cariamanga city that is placed in the Loja province, Ecuador. Five competent EFL teachers and thirty-six first and second grade high school students were the sample. A mixed approach, which included quantitative and qualitative methods, was applied to gather statistical data of the research variables and also individual information. The techniques used for this purpose were the survey, the interview, and the class observation; and the instruments employed to recollect the crucial information were an observation sheet and questionnaires. The acquired data from the questionnaires, after their tabulation, were introduced in two 4 point Likert scale tables to be described, interpreted, compared, and supported using the Literature Review. The outcomes of this investigation revealed that factors such as improper planning and non-motivated students due to the lack of interactive activities affected the students oral skills.
