Percepción y opinión pública sobre ambiente y sociedad en el cantón Ibarra, provincia de Imbabura

Abstract

Abstract: The relationship between humans and the environment reflects their environmental perceptions; this process contributes to making decisions about the environment. This study updates and compares the perception and public opinion of the inhabitants of the canton of Ibarra (Ecuador) on socio-environmental issues with data from six years ago. Its objective was to identify changes and continuities in aspects such as the environment, quality of life, participation, democracy and equity, which are relevant for sustainable development. The results show progress in the positive perception of environmental policies, especially in urban areas. However, the main environmental concerns, such as deforestation, intensive agriculture and overfishing, together with moderate satisfaction with public services, highlight the persistence of limitations in solid waste management and water quality, areas that have not experienced significant progress. In terms of food consumption, citizens prioritize economic products over healthy ones and show indifference towards the nutrition traffic light. Finally, here is a growing awareness of domestic violence, mainly against women, which calls for more effective public policies. This information is key to strengthening public policies that respond to the current needs of citizens and promote a more sustainable and inclusive development.
