Abstract

Abstract: The present research focuses on the analysis of the judgment issued by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) in the case "Carranza Alarcón Vs. Ecuador" (Judgment CDH-6-2018/061), rendered on February 3, 2020, and its relation to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16, which promotes peace, justice, and the building of effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions. The judgment highlights the violation of human rights of Ramón Rosendo Carranza Alarcón, who was subjected to arbitrary preventive detention and a prolonged and unjustified criminal process. This case underscores the importance of a judicial system that respects fundamental rights and ensures equitable access to justice, essential elements of SDG 16. The IACHR emphasizes that the protection of human rights and the guarantee of a fair trial are fundamental to strengthening trust in institutions and promoting social justice. In this context, the research also investigates how the academic preferences of law students can influence their future professional practice and their commitment to the SDGs. It is proposed that a legal education that integrates the principles of SDG 16 can motivate future lawyers to specialize in areas that promote justice, transparency, and the defense of human rights. By fostering a critical awareness of the importance of a fair and equitable judicial system, it is expected that graduates will become agents of change in their communities, thus contributing to the fulfillment of the SDGs.
