Fomento de la economía circular en la provincia de Esmeraldas por medio de estrategias innovadoras para la reutilización de residuos plásticos en el cantón Atacames, sector Tonsupa Central

Abstract

Abstract: Objective: To propose strategies for reusing plastic waste that promote a circular economy and optimize waste management in Tonsupa Central (Atacames, Esmeraldas), a tourist area affected by accumulation and poor management. Methodology: A qualitative-descriptive, non-experimental, cross-sectional study was conducted. Fifty-three participants (merchants, residents, authorities, and leaders) were selected through purposive sampling. Structured surveys and semi-structured interviews were conducted; the analysis combined quantitative and qualitative approaches, incorporating triangulation to strengthen validity. Results: Inadequate collection, a lack of recycling infrastructure, and negative perceptions of municipal management were evident. Despite this, there is a willingness to recycle (62.3%) and reuse (24.5%), although doubts persist about the effectiveness of these practices. Neighborhood collaboration and environmental education emerge as catalysts for change. Conclusions: The circular economy is viable if gaps in resources, equipment, and environmental literacy are overcome. It is recommended to strengthen cleaning programs, implement ordinances with effective controls, and develop recycling projects linked to educational campaigns, integrating the community to reduce plastic waste and position Tonsupa as a replicable model of sustainable management.
