Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this research is to conduct an in-depth analysis of Ruling No. 679-18- JP/20, a landmark decision in Ecuadorian constitutional jurisprudence concerning the right to health and access to medicines. In this context, the Constitutional Court, when addressing cases involving individuals suffering from diseases classified as catastrophic and who do not have access to the necessary medications within the public healthcare system, has sought to establish a precedent that ensures the protection of the right to health. Therefore, through a thorough review of both national and international regulations, this research aims to understand the implications of the aforementioned ruling, in order to analyze the protection of the right to health, and more specifically, to comprehend the standards guiding the right to access safe, effective, and high-quality medicines, as outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals.
