Aproximación al índice de bienestar económico sostenible (IBES). Caso de estudio Chile, período 1990- 2023

Abstract

Abstract: While gross domestic product measures a country's economic performance, it is not an indicator of well-being. This is the main reason for conducting this research, which aims to calculate the Index of Sustainable Economic Well-being (IBES) for Chile during the period 1990 2023 and evaluate the extent to which economic growth translates into sustainable well-being. The methodology employed is quantitative, based on constructing the IBES from annual series. The information was compiled from official sources, such as the World Bank, the Central Bank of Chile, the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the CASEN survey, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the National Council for Tax Administration (CONASET), and the Penn World Table. The results show that GDP per capita grows steadily, while the IBES remains significantly lower and exhibits greater sensitivity to economic and social crises. This gap persists throughout the entire analysis period. The polar coordinate graph revealed that the well-being of the Chilean economy depends to a greater extent on household consumption.
