Abstract

Abstract:This work is a comparative analysis of the symbolism and visual representation of Captain America's shield in the comics and films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), considering cultural, ideological, and narrative aspects. The shield, in addition to being an object of protection and defense, also plays a role in transmitting values of justice, heroism, and national identity. The method applied corresponds to a qualitative approach, which interprets visual and iconographic analysis, as it focuses on the analysis of social and cultural phenomena. The iconographic object of study is oriented toward examining the images, symbols, and visual representations that shape the transmedia narrative of the character. This research analyzes particularities of the shield's texture and materiality, its symbolism, and details its chromatic treatment, symbolic elements, values, and visual style. The results of this analysis reflect that, although there are differences and similarities in the study of the symbolism and graphic representation of the shield in both comics and film, these variations respond to communicative logics specific to each narrative context. Comics prioritize a more graphic and symbolic communicative language, while film leans towards a more communicative and realistic context. In conclusion, the analysis of the symbolism and graphic representation of Captain America's shield confirms that it maintains its essence as an emblem of a hero committed to peace and moral responsibility, a patriot who embodies justice and freedom and highlights the strength of patriotic values.
