Abstract: Abstract: This study analyzes communication styles and the feasibility of implementing assertive communication as a pedagogical tool for conflict resolution at the Virgilio Guerrero Center for Adolescents in Conflict with the Law in Quito. Using a qualitative, ethnographic approach, the researchers employed direct observation and semi-structured interviews with inmates and administrative staff at the center. The results reveal a marked prevalence of aggressive and passive communication styles, governed by subcultural survival codes such as the law of the bandit, and the pragmatic use of cryptic youth slang, all of which reinforce a linguistic divide with the staff. Furthermore, it was determined that the message distortion cycle, known as broken telephone, constitutes the primary driver of physical, verbal, and emotional disputes. Nevertheless, the organic viability of assertive communication was confirmed through behavioral milestones in which the inmates self-managed circles of peaceful confrontation to safeguard their normative benefits, leading to the conclusion that the transition from a punitive approach to a pedagogical-assertive model is indispensable for reeducation and affective social reintegration.
