Students’ perceptions on the factors that influence their willingness to orally communicate in the EFL classroom in Ecuadorian high schools

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to understand the perceptions of students in the factors that influence their willingness to communicate orally in English as a Second Language. This study was developed in three public schools in the city of Quito. To carry out this investigation, five courses were selected with 20 students each, who made a sample of 100 students. The methods were quantitative and qualitative; the instruments used for data collection were a questionnaire for the student and an observation sheet. The techniques were observation and note taking. The results show that students are not motivated to speak during hours of English, since they consider that the classes are boring due to the fact that teachers tend to base their work on themes established without interest, which causes the unattractive students consider these issues.
