The Influence of large classes in the English language teaching-learning process in Ecuadorian high schools

Abstract

The study, "The influence of large classes in the process of teaching and learning English in secondary schools of Ecuador" is aimed at establishing the factors that affect the process of teaching and learning in classrooms with a high number of students in secondary schools in the country. The sample was taken at four high schools in the city of Quito, being selected 183 students from 5 classrooms English: Eighth, ninth, tenth basic general education and students attending first and second year of high school. The age of the students ranged between 12 and 17 years old. The quantitative and qualitative methods were applied in order to describe and analyze the data collected; for which aspects: instructional, psychological and social were considered. This study concludes that the many classes do not significantly affect the teaching and learning of English in secondary schools, since the results show that teachers are able to apply appropriate methods and to strategies that students involved in interesting activities to acquire the four skills of the target language.
