Abstract

Abstract: For Ecuador, the agricultural sector is not only a determining variable in the dynamics of a country's economy, but also of its food sovereignty. This study focuses on analyzing the role that agriculture and livestock have played in Ecuador's food security. Official reports and statistics issued by government agencies and international organizations were evaluated as a basis for assessing the role it has played in guaranteeing the permanent self-sufficiency of culturally appropriate food for the peoples and communities of Ecuador. The results showed that agricultural and livestock activity has been instrumental in ensuring food security; however, its participation is affected by factors such as the availability of land, the decrease in investment by the State and the low yield per hectare. It was pointed out that there is a decrease in the use of agro-nutrients. It was concluded that, although ambitious and promising plans have been devised for the agricultural and livestock sector, the indicators show little effectiveness of the policies implemented.
