Factors that influence high school students' English oral communication skills in Ecuadorian face-to-face learning environments

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to analyze the linguistic and emotional factors that influence high school students English oral communication skills in Ecuadorian face-to-face learning environments. This investigation was carried out in a private high school in Santo Domingo. The participants for this study were 40 students from bachillerato level and one English teacher. This is a mixed study that embraces quantitative and qualitative approaches. Collect data was through questionnaires, and an interview addressed for students and teacher. Besides an observation checklist was used in 8 English classes. The results showed that the linguistic factors influence EFL students oral communication, and the most common points such as grammar structure and vocabulary, had a strong influence to affect oral skills. Furthermore, concerning emotional factors, nervousness, anxiety, and the pressure to speak impact negatively on high school students English communication skills.
