Abstract

Abstract: This research project constitutes a comprehensive exploration of the academic preferences of law students in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a special focus on SDG 16, which focuses on peace, justice, and building strong institutions. The research focuses specifically on the subject of Human Rights and on the detailed analysis of the case "Villarroel Merino and Others v. Ecuador". The inherent complexity that exists between criminal law and fundamental freedoms is highlighted, emphasizing the importance of a legal education that is committed to equity and sustainability. The conclusions obtained from this analysis highlight the urgent need to address existing challenges, such as negative perceptions towards certain areas of law, while pointing out significant opportunities to improve legal education. Specific actions are proposed to strengthen the social commitment of law students, improve the judicial system, and promote more conscious academic choices aligned with the principles of sustainability and equity. This project not only examines the academic preferences of law students, but also suggests concrete measures to enrich their education by fostering values ​​of equity, sustainability, and social commitment in the legal education process.
