The use of authentic material through whatsapp in teaching listening skills in EFL out-of-classroom settings

Abstract

Abstract: The present study aimed to determine the impact of the use of authentic material delivered via WhatsApp in improving the listening skills of the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners in a non-classroom setting. Of this Likewise, the current study was carried out in a public educational institution in the province from Tungurahua, students in the second year of a secondary school were considered. This research was approached through the mixed method, since it uses numerical data and interpretations obtained through the teacher and the students to understand their experiences. Additionally, the instruments included two questionnaires designed to explore students' perceptions of authentic materials and the advantages and disadvantages of the WhatsApp application, using Likert scales. A interview to gather the teacher's perspective, and the researcher completed a observation after each intervention. The results showed that the materials authentic, accompanied by the WhatsApp application, constitute tools innovative to be used outside the classroom. These tools were effective for practice and reinforce the listening skills of the students, who showed commitment and motivation to complete the proposed activities.
