The use of authentic material through WhatsApp in teaching listening skills in EFL out-of-classroom settings

Abstract

Abstract: This research titled "The use of authentic material through WhatsApp in teaching listening skills in environments outside the English classroom has The objective is to determine the impact of using authentic material delivered through of WhatsApp in improving listening skills of EFL students in extracurricular settings. Ten second-year high school students participated and an English teacher. It was carried out in a public institution in the city of Loja and A mixed methodology was used to collect both qualitative and quantitative. Survey, observation and interview techniques were used, together with the following instruments: a student perception questionnaire, a questionnaire for students on the advantages and disadvantages of using authentic materials through WhatsApp, a questionnaire for the teacher and a observation sheet. To apply the instruments, a WhatsApp group was created for students to carry out six listening activities with videos such as authentic material. The results reveal that the use of videos as material authentic was extremely beneficial because it helped them learn the pronunciation and improved their listening and understanding of dialogues in the target language.
