Descripción : The purpose of this research is to determine and analyse the supporting materials used in EFL public and private high schools; furthermore, compare the supporting materials used in public and private high schools. This research took place in a public and a private high school in the cantons of Gonzanamá and Calvas in the province of Loja. The public school, this is located in Gonzanamá and it has morning and evening schedules so the students have different ages; they do not live with their parents and have to work. On the other hand, the private institution has only daily schedule the students have similar ages besides they live with their parents. In order to perform this investigation, the qualitative and quantitative methods were applied. After having observed five classes in each school mentioned above, the information taken from these high schools was analysed and it confirms that the use of supplementary materials for EFL classes is mostly employed by private schools than public one; therefore, there is a great variety in the use of supplementary material in these institutions.
