Conocimientos populares y actitudes sobre los búhos en la ciudad de Catamayo

Abstract

The knowledge that human beings and society have of their physical and biological environment is fundamental for cultural and economic development, as well as for the management and conservation of species such as owls. These birds have exercised a strong and controversial fascination in humans. However, the ignorance of their habits and importance for the balance of the ecological systems, has provoked in several occasions that they are sacrificed. The present study sought to explore what is the knowledge, perception and attitudes that the citizens of Catamayo have against the owls. To this end, a survey was applied to 381 inhabitants, divided into four age strata. The results, on the one hand, suggest that there is a tendency among the respondents towards the protection and conservation of owls. Likewise, demographic differences of gender and age were found in the perceptions, attitudes and knowledge of these birds. The information provided in this study is of ethnozoological interest and establishes the basis for future management and conservation plans of owls in the province of Loja and Ecuador.
