Ecuadorian high school teachers perceptions on ICT use in their EFL classes

Abstract

The present study is about Ecuadorian high school teachers' perceptions on ICT use in their EFL classes. Its objective is to investigate and analyze the perceptions of teachers regarding the use of ICT in foreign language classes. The research was carried out in different institutions, namely, private and public high schools in the province of Cañar, Ecuador. Altogether 20 male and female EFL teachers participated in the survey; furthermore, 6 teachers of both genders were also interviewed. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used to collect information in order to enable the author to gauge teachers' perceptions of the use of ICT. The results show that only a minority of the teachers consider the use of ICT as a barrier; some of the factors identified are insecurity, insufficient ICT skills, and age. Also, the results reveal that there are few differences in the use of technological resources between gender, and most teachers demonstrate a positive attitude regarding the use of ICT in EFL classes. In fact, almost all instructors agree that ICT can be a useful tool for teaching.
