Teachers Perceptions on their Students Reading Habits: A Comparative Analysis between Public and Private High Schools

Abstract:The subject of this study is "Perception of Teachers in the Reading Habits of their Students: a Comparative Analysis between Public and Private Schools". The main purpose of research discovered teachers 'perception of their students' reading habits by making a comparative analysis between public and private schools. The sample consisted of 150 students from public schools and 150 from private. This study used the qualitative and quantitative method. Teacher questionnaires, teacher interviews, student questionnaires, observation sheets, prest-test and post-test were the instruments. The results revealed that reading as pleasure, poetry and motivation to read, are factors that both schools share. In contrast, the influence of family members, an adequate place to read and a small bookstore at home are factors that private schools differ from others. Private school students are influenced by their relatives who read as a leisure activity. Additionally, tongue twisters and poetry were activities that helped students practice reading as they learned by making mistakes.
