Abstract

Abstract:The objective of this thesis is to test the tourism Kuznets curve hypothesis for South America for the period 1995-2014, for this, the authors used an onlinear form of tourism, metric tons of CO2 per capita, GDP per capitain constant dollars, percentage of urban population and percentage of renewable energy, as variables. Results reveal that tourism reduces the CO2 emissions,but its non linear form does not; therefore,the tourism Kuznets curve hypothesis does not hold for South America in the time tested.The authors also found that renewable energy consumptionis one of the most important tools to further reduce carbon emissions.
