Evaluation of an english language program to identify the elements of the curriculum. A case study of a public highschool in Ecuador

Abstract

Abstract:The present case study aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of an English language curriculum through students' and teachers' perceptions on the main components found in the curriculum. For this purpose, the present research was developed under the mixed-method approach. The participants of the study were 3 EFL teachers and 5 EFL students of the second year of Senior high school who belong to a public institution in the city of Loja. The use of questionnaires was the main instrument for data collection. The results indicated that students' needs are based on academic purposes and on finding better job opportunities. Besides, the teachers' knowledge about the different components of the course has allowed them to implement methods and strategies in their teaching process to achieve the learning outcomes of the curriculum. However, the poor quality of the classroom environment and the lack of internet and technology have interrupted the teaching and learning process. Lastly, the institution also faces poor communication among administrators and teachers, lack of teaching training opportunities, and equal workspaces.
