Abordaje perinatal, lactancia materna y atención del recién nacido en épocas de pandemia por Covid-19

Abstract

Abstract: The coronavirus disease, COVID-19, nowadays, has become one of the greatest challenges for public health worldwide; even more, as it is considered especially dangerous for vulnerable groups,between them: pregnant women and newborns. Therefore, this work collects the current available information on the correct perinatal approach, breastfeeding, and newborn care procedures that should be performed given the COVID-19 outbreak. Current information was collected from the Pubmed database and some health organizations and associations. Initially a general description of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, its origin and epidemiology are done. Then, a bibliographic review was performed, gathering information on the risks for pregnant women, the possible vertical transmission from mother to fetus, safe breastfeeding, and care for the newborn. It s included both, the care in case of, suspicious patients, as well as confirmed coronavirus infection. 27 articles and 9 documents focused on health were selected for analysis, concluding that until now, there is no evidence of vertical transmission from mother to fetus, and also no contraindication of breastfeeding from a mother positive for Covid-19, so this is not a cause to discontinue this beneficial practice for the newborn, but some biosecurity procedures are recommended for the mother and the child, according to the state of the Covid-19 disease.
