The influence of independent learning strategies on the development of english writing skills on 15 to 17 year-old students

Abstract

Abstract: Independent learning is a quality pursued by learners to become successful in many personal and professional fields. One of the biggest concerns in teaching English as a foreign language is to identify and analyze the influence of independent learning strategies on the development of writing in English. The purpose of the research is to analyze the relationship between independent learning strategies and the development of writing skills. This study used a mixed-method with a sample of fifty students and six teachers from a public high school in Ambato. A set of surveys and interviews were applied to both, students and teachers. The data gathered was tabulated and information was presented in tables. After the data analysis, it was concluded that students have acquired independent learning strategies and they have contributed to their English writing development placing most of the learners at the A2 level according to the Common European Framework Reference and it was recommended that teachers keep on using learning strategies and use a plan to reinforce with specific objectives to improve language skills.
