| Abstract: | Abstract:Lantana camara is a genus of herbaceous plants and perennial flowering shrubs belonging to the family Verbenaceae which comprises about 22 genera and 160 species. It is an ornamental and invasive plant and has been used as a natural medicine in different parts of the world. The objective of this research was to conduct a literature review on the chemistry and biological activity of the species Lantana camara. The information was compiled from 79 scientific articles, among them the characterization of its essential oil and its secondary metabolites allowed describing the functional groups present in this species. The αhumulene,E-β-caryophyllene, zingiberene, γ-curcumene, limonene and germacrene D are the most representative compounds of this plant, together with the other 87 compounds give Lantana camara anticancer, antifilarial, nematicide, antibacterial, insecticide, antileishmanial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activity. Thus, it could be corroborated that Lantana camara has a great series of activities with high medicinal value and impact to treat different conditions. |
| Description: | Resumen:Lantana camara es un género de plantas herbáceas y arbustos perennes con flores pertenece a la familia Verbenaceae la cual comprende alrededor de 22 géneros y 160 especies. Es una planta ornamental e invasora, se ha utilizado como medicina natural en diferentes partes del mundo. El objetivo de esta investigación fue realizar una revisión bibliográfica en lo referente a la química y actividad biológica de la especie Lantana camara. La información fue recopilada de 79 artículos científicos, entre ellas la caracterización de su aceite esencial y sus metabolitos secundarios permitieron describir los grupos funcionales presentes en esta especie. El α-humuleno,E-β-cariofileno, zingibereno, γ-curcumeno, limoneno y germacreno D son los compuestos más representativos de esta planta, junto con los otros 87 compuestos le otorgan a Lantana camara actividad anticancerígena, antifilaria, nematicida, antibacteriana, insecticida, antileishmanial, antifúngica, antiinflamatoria, y antioxidante. Así se pudo corroborar que Lantana camara posee una gran serie de actividades con alto valor e impacto medicinal para tratar diferentes dolencias o afecciones. |
