The use of authentic material through WhatsApp in teaching listening skills in EFL out-of-classroom settings

Abstract: This study explored the potential of using authentic materials distributed through the WhatsApp platform to improve listening skills in B1-level English as a foreign language learners. Using a mixed-methods approach, quantitative and qualitative methods were combined to analyze the impact of six authentic video-based activities designed to encourage active listening and interaction in a virtual environment familiar to the students. In addition, appropriate study techniques were used, such as a teacher interview, observation, and, of course, a survey. The participants, a group of 10 students from an educational institution in Otavalo, experienced a significant increase in their confidence when listening in English, largely attributed to the immediacy of feedback and the opportunity to practice the language in real-life communicative situations. The results obtained support the viability of using WhatsApp as a complementary tool in foreign language teaching, offering a flexible and motivating space for developing listening skills. Furthermore, the careful selection of authentic materials and the design of meaningful activities were identified as key factors in the success of the intervention.
