The use of authentic material through WhatsApp in teaching listening skills in EFL out-of-classroom settings.

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to analyze the use of authentic material through WhatsApp in teaching listening skills in EFL out-of-classroom setting, and to examine the impact that this tool generates in the process of teaching English. The study sample consisted of 6 female and 5 male students from the third year of high school who belong to a public school located in the city of Cochancay, with an age range of 16 to 18 years, and the English tutor teacher. The students' English was intermediate level. To obtain the data, both qualitative and quantitative methods were applied in order to measure the progress of the students during the course of the interventions, 2 questionnaires were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the authentic materials through WhatsApp outside the classroom context. Both questionnaires were measured with a Likert scale, allowing precise measurement of students' responses. It was found that the use of videos as authentic materials has a beneficial effect as it generates motivation and engagement in the students and this allowed them to improve the development of their listening skills.
