Abstract

Abstract: This research evaluates attitudes toward reading among elementary school students at Stella Maris School in the Galapagos Islands, using a non-experimental, quantitative approach with a descriptive scope. A Likert-scale questionnaire was administered to a sample of 40 students to measure attitudes toward reading. Our study found that these students do not really relate well to reading, and this is evident in three main aspects of their daily lives. When we asked them what they think, almost two-thirds (65%) do not believe that reading helps them acquire new knowledge, and 6 out of 10 students do not see how reading could be useful to them in the future. As for how they feel, 7 out of 10 told us that reading does not bring them any joy, and 65% are bored when they have to read something. If we look at what they actually do, 80% never set foot in the library, and three-quarters of the students leave their books half-read. The problem is even more complicated in the Galapagos, where there aren't many books available. Given all this, it's clear that something needs to be done soon: we need children to find a love for reading, have better reading experiences, and more opportunities to practice reading here on the islands.
