Análisis global del desarrollo de una Copa América: Caso Copa América USA 2024

Abstract

Abstract: This research analyses the global development of the Copa América 2024, with special emphasis on the perceptions of key football stakeholders such as journalists, former players, coaches and sports leaders. The general objective of the study was to understand the impact, relevance and significance of the tournament in its edition organised in the United States. To this end, a qualitative methodology based on semi-structured interviews was used, and the study sample was the Copa America 2024. Among the main findings, there was a positive assessment of the infrastructure and operation of the event, but also significant criticism of the elitisation of football, the loss of connection with the traditional public and CONMEBOL's management. Furthermore, the actors consulted reaffirmed the symbolic value of the Copa América as a space for identity, national representation and social cohesion. The research concludes that, in order to preserve its cultural legitimacy, the tournament must balance its growing commercial logic with an ethical, transparent and inclusive management that responds to the historical values of South American football.
