The impact of Mobile-Assisted Languaje Learning (MALL) Applications on EFL Vocabulary Acquisition

Abstract:The study, "The Effectiveness of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL)," aimed to examine the effectiveness of mobile applications, specifically Quizizz, in the development and acquisition of vocabulary in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) environments. The study was conducted in a public high school in the city of Loja, Ecuador, and employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data. The sample consisted of twenty-four second-year high school students and one teacher. The data collection instruments included a diagnostic questionnaire, a pre-test, five intervention sessions, a post-test, an observation sheet, a Likert scale, and a semi-structured interview with the teacher. The results showed improvement in the students' vocabulary, with higher scores on the post-test than on the pre-test. Participants expressed positive perceptions about the use of MALL applications, valuing the process and progress of their knowledge. Although a small percentage showed apprehension when using new vocabulary, the study concludes that MALL applications can be a beneficial tool for vocabulary development.
