Descripción : Supplementary materials refer to any material that is used by teachers who want to improve or complement their lessons using motivating resources in addition to the course book. The main focus of the present research is to determine how, how frequent, and what types of these materials are being used in a private and a public high school through the observation of both schools. A comparative analysis was also done, based on those observations. This research work was carried out in the city of Guayaquil; to complete it, the English teachers of both, private and public high schools, and their students, were chosen as a sample. During the process, observations were applied as well as qualitative and quantitative methods, which were used to complete the whole process. It was possible to conclude that supplementary material improves EFL learning because it increases the attention of students, brings variety into the classroom, helps students conceptualize better, gives support to memory and shows that teachers care about the class and their students. In other words, they offer possibility to improve the educational system.
