Factors that influence high school students' English oral communication skills in Ecuadorian face-to-face learning environment

Abstract

Abstract: The present study entitled Factors that influence the skills of Oral communication in English of high school students in learning environments. face-to-face learning for Ecuadorians was carried out in a bilingual institution in the city Ambato to determine how language and emotions affect the ability to students to communicate with each other in face-to-face learning environments. The Participants included forty first-year high school students and two English instructors. A mixed method was used. Instruments included questionnaires for students and teachers, observation sheets and an interview semi-structured. The findings revealed that most of the students have a adequate level of English that allows them to communicate effectively due to the academic pressure exerted by teachers and the educational institution. Also I know found that this causes students to develop a fear of making mistakes, particularly in graded oral exams. Consequently, it is concluded that fear was the emotional factor that affected the quality of verbal communication. However, it was found that this factor did not prevent students from holding a conversation.
