Students´ Perceptions about Motivation to Learn English as a Foreign Language

Abstract

Abstract: The present study analyzed the students' perceptions about motivation to learn English as a foreign language. This study was conducted at a public high school in Zamora Chinchipe. The population comprises 30 high school students between 16 and 17 years old, and 10 English teachers. A quantitative method was used to analyze and contrast data. The instruments used to collect the data were a Likert scale survey and a questionnaire with open and ended questions, which were applied to students, and teachers respectively. The results showed that students have a positive perception toward learning English. Students are motivated to learn the language, such as getting a better job or traveling abroad. Teachers consistently incorporate diverse activities and tasks to motivate students. Moreover, it could be observed that motivation is a significant factor in learning EFL.
