The use of authentic material through WhatsApp in teaching listening skills in EFL out-of-classroom settings

Abstract

Abstract: This research investigates the use of authentic materials through WhatsApp to enhance listening skills in EFL learning out-of-classroom settings. The primary objective is to determine the impact of WhatsApp on students' listening abilities and to gauge the perceptions of both students and teachers regarding its effectiveness in EFL learning. Conducted at a public school located in the jungle of Ecuador, in the city of Taisha, the study involved a sample of fifteen high school EFL learners. A mixed-method approach was utilized, combining quantitative data collected through surveys and qualitative insights obtained via interviews. The analysis focused on several aspects. Firstly, it examined the effectiveness of authentic materials, such as videos, in improving listening skills within the context of EFL learning. Secondly, it explored the advantages and disadvantages of using WhatsApp for language learning through surveys and intervies. The study concluded that integrating authentic materials through WhatsApp significantly enhances students' listening skills and increases their engagement and motivation in EFL learning. Moreover, the findings highlight the potential of mobile technology to extend learning beyond the classroom, thereby fostering a more interactive and engaging educational experience in EFL contexts.
