The use of authentic material through WhatsApp in teaching listening skills in EFL out-of-classroom settings

Abstract

Abstract: This thesis investigates the use of authentic material via WhatsApp to teach listening skills in EFL out-of-classroom settings. Its primary aim is to assess the impact of using authentic material delivered through WhatsApp on enhancing these skills in out-of-classroom settings. The research was carried out at an English institute in Loja, Ecuador, involving ten students and their teacher, all aged between 15 and 16 with proficiency levels ranging from B1 to B2. The process began with a literature review, compiling relevant articles and books. Mixed methods, including both quantitative and qualitative instruments like classroom observations, student questionnaires, and a teacher interview were used to collect and analyze the information. Each student questionnaire comprised ten statements, which they rated using a scale of agreement. The students' responses were analyzed and supported by the findings in the literature review and class observations. The research s main conclusion is that integrating apps such as WhatsApp into EFL out-of-classroom settings enhances students' listening skills and enables real-time communication between students and their instructors, fostering a more dynamic and interactive learning environment.
