The use of authentic material through WhatsApp in teaching listening skills in EFL out-of-classroom settings.

Abstract

Abstract: This study investigated the use of authentic learning materials delivered via WhatsApp to improve English as a foreign language listening skills outside the classroom. A literature review was conducted on the integration of technology in English language learning, the use of authentic materials, and the development of listening activities. Six previous studies were analyzed using mixed methods. Quantitative data were collected using structured questionnaires and qualitative data were collected using observations and unstructured interviews. Students who were learning English as a foreign language participated. The study found that the use of WhatsApp facilitated the handling of authentic material and contributed to the development of metacognitive listening strategies. However, challenges such as technical problems, possible distractions, and the need to ask teachers questions were also identified. Although there are advantages and disadvantages of using WhatsApp to teach English outside the classroom, this result shows that WhatsApp enhances listening skills through a flexible learning environment and access to authentic materials. This suggests that it can be an effective tool for improving listening skills through a flexible learning environment and access to authentic materials.
