The influence of storytelling on children s motivation to learn English as a foreign language

Abstract

Abstract: The present study entitled The influence of storytelling on childrens motivation to learn English as a foreign language aimed to analyse the use of storytelling as an active methodology to motivate children s to learn English as a foreign language. This research was carried out in a private school in the province of Loja and employed a quantitative and qualitative method approach. The sample for this study consisted of thirty four students in the sixth year of basic education and their subject teacher. The instruments to be used during the data collection phase were a student survey, a semi-structured interview and a pre- and post-test. The results indicated that storytelling significantly increased the students' interest in the course content, making learning more attractive and pleasant and increasing their motivation. In addition, a marked improvement in academic performance was observed after the intervention, showing that this methodology improved understanding of the subject matter. In conclusion, storytelling in English language teaching is a highly effective methodology to increase motivation and improve students' academic performance, making learning more engaging and improving their language skills.
